Here at The Munching Mongoose, we’re all about healthy eating, and living a healthier life. And one of the buzzwords around a healthy diet, is ‘superfoods’. Superfoods are supposedly the superheroes of nature; “nutrient-rich foods considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.” But aren’t they also expensive and difficult to find? And do they really work? What’s so super about them?
Well, when we think of superfoods, we don’t immediately think of weirdly named plants from South America and strangely coloured powders. We think of whole seasonal fruits and veggies, that have been grown in harmony with nature, in healthy, vibrant soil, and are superfoods in their own right! Eating more organic fruits and vegetables is the first place to start on your journey to leading a healthier life. For example, good old garlic has been shown to be helpful in fighting off the common cold, and blueberries have been shown to help lower inflammation. And we believe that all fruits & veggies bring something to the table (pun intended…), which is why we encourage eating a wide variety of seasonal fruits & veggies. Tomatoes are full of lycopene which helps to protect our skin against the summer sun, whilst citrus fruit is full of the vitamin C our bodies need in Winter.
Eating a wide variety of seasonal fruits & veggies can give our bodies many of the nutrients they need, but we can also look beyond your typical fruits and veggies, to other more unusual plants that add value to a healthy diet. Baobabs are a good example. To many of us, baobabs are the cool upside down trees you see on your holiday to Kruger or Mozambique. But Baobab trees were used in traditional African medicine, to treat a wide range of ailments. Today, Baobab powder is made from the dried fruit of the Baobab tree, and it packs a powerful nutritional punch. It is rich in Vitamin C, antioxidants, magnesium, potassium and B vitamins. Another example is the Moringa tree, and the powder made from it’s dried leaves, is often referred to as “nature’s multivitamin”.
So when you get your box of fresh produce from us this week, give your fresh, seasonal, organic fruits and veggies the superfood respect they deserve. But you’ll also find another superfood surprise, some baobab or moringa powder, from Earthtribe (recipes included!).
