What we’re doing for Plastic Free July

Are you ready to take on Plastic Free July? We sure are, and we’re super excited by this initiative! As a company, we work really hard to reduce our environmental footprint where we can. Our weekly deliveries come in reusable boxes and bags and our milk comes standard in reusable bottles. We prioritise local farmers and artisans, thus reducing our carbon footprint, and we support organic farms, meaning all our fruits & vegetables are produced more sustainably, using environmentally-friendly methods. And, as part of an ongoing commitment to reducing plastic waste, we are going to work even harder to reduce the plastic packaging that comes with our fruits & vegetables!

On a weekly basis, we have a seasonal variety of fruits and veggies available for our customers. As a company that delivers fresh produce, quality is of utmost importance. We only work with farms and suppliers that we trust, and that have the same high standards we do, especially when it comes to quality and provenance. As such, it isn’t always possible for all fruits & veggies to come completely package-free.

Let’s take a look at this week’s harvest; lemons, papaya, bananas, green peppers, beetroot, cucumber, sweet potatoes and spring onions – all loose, with no packaging of any kind, completely plastic free! Then some veggies that need a little protection or tend to go soft quite quickly – avos, baby marrows, turnips & carrots – wrapped in recyclable brown paper. And finally, some leafy greens, which don’t transport well, and wilt very quickly – lettuce & swiss chard – wrapped in plastic. Reducing our plastic packaging is something that we will continue to work on, internally, and with our farmers and suppliers. We want to encourage them to embrace a more plastic free approach when packaging their products, and explore alternative packaging solutions. And you can support us in this, by making sure your produce is stored correctly once we’ve delivered it to your door.

What else can you do, in support of Plastic Free July? We encourage you to make a start by refusing the most common single-use plastic items – shopping bags, straws, takeaway containers & cutlery and plastic water bottles. And instead, start to re-use what you already have. It’s far too easy nowadays to ‘throw something away’. But where is ‘away’? Unfortunately, it’s just somewhere else on this beautiful planet we live on. Let’s change that situation, one small plastic free step at a time!
